Meaning in music

Listening to some old CDs which I've got in my house, I was thinking about the great amount of things that could be expressed through this art. Then this song came to my mind "Knocking on Heaven's Door." This song was written by Bob Dylan in 1973 and was voted  #190 in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. This is Gun's n' Roses version, have a look at the amazing double-neck guitar that Ron Bumblefoot plays.

What do you think about the lyrics? What is the song about?

Mama, take this badge off of me
I can't use it anymore.
It's gettin' dark, too dark for me to see
I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's door.

Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

Mama, put my guns in the ground
I can't shoot them anymore.
That long black cloud is comin' down
I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's door.

Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

This is Dylan's original version
